Wisdom
|
Within each of us is a profound wisdom guiding us on our journey through life. Surrounding this wisdom are layers of other instincts, understandings and knowledge accumulated in the mind and body. The mind has years of academic and worldly knowledge combined with logical and analytical abilities. The body has generations of instinctual wisdom and the knack of sensing things. The heart holds our burning passions and acts as a bridge to our soul. Our soul extends beyond this body and lifetime, carrying the wisdom of our higher purpose.
The various layers of information contained in our body, mind and heart may diverge from one another, leaving us to feel confused about what action to take or which direction to go, yet when we move into inner stillness we access our true wisdom.
At times we have to sort through the different aspects of conflicting guidance. The mind may assert one route, while the body senses another, and through the debate, the heart and soul may not be heard. This is why it's important to continue listening after the mind and body have had their say, for underneath will be the softer gentle voice of the heart and the deeper wisdom of the soul.

- What aspect of yourself do you listen to most often; your practical and logical mind, your emotional and instinctual body, the longings of your heart, or the intuitive knowingness of your soul? How does this support you and/or hinder you?
- Which aspect of yourself do you listen to least often? Why is this and how does this affect you?
- What aspects of yourself would you like to listen to more? What steps can you take to do this? What would you have to let go of? What would you have to embrace?

- Bring to your awareness a question, concern or decision you need to make regarding your life. Notice the first part of yourself to give its opinion; your mind through thoughts, your body through emotions or sensations, your heart through feelings and longings or your soul through intuition and knowingness. See if you can hear or sense all aspects of yourself.
- Practice listening to all parts of yourself whenever you have a decision to make. If you are an analytical person it might help to start with your mind and ask it what it thinks. Ask it for the pros and cons of both sides of a situation. When it's complete, thank it and imagine turning a dial or switch to the off position as a way to turn off your thinking mind for the moment. Then connect to your body and feel the sensations and emotions within. Ask your body how it feels about the situation. You may get answers in words, images, sensations or feelings. Thank the body and then put your hand over your heart and ask your heart how it feels and what it longs for. Once you have a sense of what the heart wants, thank it and spend a few minutes moving into inner stillness. Within this stillness ask your soul or higher self, what's most important about the situation. Then ask what the next best step is for you to take.
- If your mind, body, heart and soul all want dissimilar things, or want to take different routes, engage in a negotiation between them. Your heart and soul know what's best for you, but you may need to ask your mind and body what would help them feel safe in following the heart and soul's wisdom. See if you can find an agreement between all aspects of yourself in order to release resistance and move forward.
"Wisdom is the supreme part of happiness."
