Pathways

“There are many paths but only one journey.” Naomi Judd
There are many paths we can take on this journey through life and fortunately we can change paths at any time if we find we are headed in an unpleasant direction. Embark on a new career, move to a new city, end a relationship, start a new hobby, change our health habits and so on. Even if we don’t consciously choose a new path when the detour signs warn us, we somehow end up where we’re supposed to be, albeit a little bruised at times.
This journey called ‘life’ has a way of teaching us exactly what we need to learn, but ultimately it’s up to us whether we learn it the easy way or the hard way, whether we take a bumpy road or a smooth road. Within the paths of our life, we can also decide what type of pathway to take. Read the rest of this entry »

Process

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot…” Ecclesiastes 3
Life is an ongoing process of new beginnings, growth spurts, blossoming stages, bumps and hills (or steep slopes and rocky ravines for some), cruising and coasting, winding down, dying off, and starting all over again. Yet so many of us get attached to one or two stages of the process; some love the excitement of new beginnings, but get bored coasting, some just want the end result, getting frustrated in the middle, and some are so afraid of endings, they get stuck somewhere along the way.
Imagine what it would be like to be in the present moment with each stage of a process, enjoying the whole ride from beginning to end, not rushing, resisting, or avoiding any part of it, but embracing the natural cycle of life. Perhaps we would relax more in our work, accept more in our relationships, let go more of our judgments, and love ourselves and others more deeply. Read the rest of this entry »

Growth

“The growth of understanding follows an ascending spiral rather than a straight line.” Joanna Field

We are continually growing, expanding and evolving in life. Nothing stands still; just as there is stillness in movement, there is movement in stillness. At times we may feel as though nothing is changing, yet deep within there are subtle, powerful shifts taking place. At other times we feel the turbulent winds of change in our own lives and on the planet. These growth spurts can be intimidating, fearful and depressing, or they can be exciting, empowering and uplifting, depending on our perspective. When we trust our inner knowing and operate from our spiritual selves we see the bigger picture and surrender into the flow of life which, like nature, moves towards balance. If we resist the process of growth or try to manipulate or control it, we lose ourselves into a spiral of fear and confusion.
We are growing individually as well as a collectively on the planet. In the beginning stage of change things can appear chaotic, as what is no longer needed is released, and new aspects are strengthened. If we relax in the stages of growth, knowing it is a healthy process, in the end we emerge like a butterfly from a cocoon - free to fly wherever we choose. Read the rest of this entry »

Success

“To freely bloom – that is my definition of success.” Gerry Spence
Success has a wonderful feeling associated with it: a confident, on top of the world, joyful kind of sensation that ripples through your body connecting you with your divine purpose in life. It’s unfortunate that the definition of success is limited to the achievement of something intended; usually something external such as financial or career goals. When we view success this way, its short lived status is fleeting and left behind in a dust covered memory with the next taste of success dangling out at the end of a stick. And what happens when we don’t manifest our intentions? Our mind uses the past to create fear and doubt about the future and we re-create that flavour in our life.
What if we viewed success as a state of being: an inner knowing that our only real achievement in life is to be here on this planet being our true self - nothing more, nothing less - me being me, you being you, and that’s all there is to it. Wouldn’t that take the pressure off of past so-called failures, and future fears and doubts if we knew deep down that we are a success no matter what? And the truth is that we are, and the only way to be happy with our intentions and manifestations is if we operate in our daily lives from a state of success; a feeling of being good enough with nothing to prove, a feeling of inner confidence and joy for being alive. Experiences
Posted on February 1st, 2009
“Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.”
Soren Kierkegaard

We all have experiences. The only meanings they have are the ones we give them. We often categorize our experiences into one side or the other of a dichotomy: good/bad, positive/negative, pleasant/unpleasant, exciting/boring, rich/bland and so on. Occasionally we might find a balance in between and claim the experience was okay or so-so. What if we didn’t judge, analyze or slot our experiences into any grouping, but instead let them just be?
Perhaps we’d release ourselves from the pressure of having to succeed, be good, and have only pleasant experiences. We might feel relief and freedom as we remove the weight of failure. Who set the rules for what a positive or negative experience is anyway? What about the lessons gained from a mistake, or the growth, opportunities and richness that arise from what appeared to be an unpleasant experience? Read the rest of this entry »

Stillness
Posted on January 1st, 2009
“When you lose touch with inner stillness, you lose touch with yourself. When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.”
Eckhart Tolle
Viewing a tranquil lake on a windless day or a snow peaked mountain at sunset can still your mind and body. The beauty of nature connects us to our soul and we pause, if even for a moment, to rest in stillness. Our daily activities call our attention outward. We give so much to everyone and everything else in our lives. As rewarding as this may be, it can also be tiring and depleting if we don’t find moments for ourselves to replenish and re-energize.
Like leaving a stormy blizzard to come inside and nestle by a fireplace with a warm cup of tea, we need to take time away from our hectic lives to be with ourselves in restful stillness. Whether it’s a soothing hot bath, an evening of candlelight and peaceful music, or a silent meditation where we connect with our soul and the source of life, these self-loving moments calm our busy thoughts so we can simply be, without having to think, plan or do.
