Centered

“Flow with whatever may happen and let your mind be free. Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate.”
Zhuangzi
Centered in yourself, in your life, in your very being brings peace, balance, and clarity. Yet with so many external distractions, to-dos, and responsibilities it’s easy to get off center and lose your internal focus.
We lean sideways searching for answers and guidance from without, we topple over trying to please others, and we tumble down slippery slopes of pleasure and despair. Whenever we give our power away to something outside of ourselves, whether it’s pleasant or not, we risk losing our center and essentially losing ourselves.
When we pull our energy back from chasing goals and trying to make things happen, we move back into the flow of life where we intuitively know what to do in the moment, without having to plan ahead and rehearse the future. When we stop pursuing perfection and instead accept what is, we allow change to happen with divine timing. And when we let go of the need for external approval and attention, our own brilliance emanates from within us.
Being centered within requires trust, patience and love; trusting that our world won’t crumble if we put the taskmaster aside; patiently allowing everything to work out as we relax into the moment; and loving ourselves so deeply we take care of our needs and honor our values.
Insights into Being Centered
♦ How centered are you at this time? Is your energy, focus and attention anchored within as you extend it to others, work and circumstances, or have you become lopsided giving too much away to something or someone else?
♦ What knocks you off center? What pulls, pushes, or compels you to lose your balance? Is it the small things in life like traffic, irritation and distraction? Or is it drama, crisis or other people’s problems? Perhaps it’s your passion that becomes so enticing it takes you off course? What does it feel like to be unbalanced?
♦ What supports you to be centered? What thoughts, activities and actions bring you back to balance? What supports you to be here in the moment, anchored within yourself, trusting the flow of life? How does it feel to be balanced?
Inspiration on Being Centered
♦ Take a moment right now as you read this to center within yourself. Bring all of your energy back into the center of your head as you read the words on your screen. Feel your energy fill your body. Feel your connection to the center of the planet. Have at least 50% of your awareness on what’s going on within you as you focus on the external. Notice how this feels.
♦ Reflect on areas of your life where you are out of balance. If you’re not sure try this simple visual exercise. Close your eyes and create an image of a rose out in front of you that represents you. Then create a rose beside it that represents someone or something else in your life (choose something specific). Notice if your rose stands tall and straight in relation to the other rose or if it leans over, shrinks or bends away. This will give you an indication of what’s going on between you and your significant others, work, and life circumstances (such as finances, food, world events and so on). Then use your intuition to discover what pulls you off center and what supports you to be centered.
♦ Whenever you notice you’re off balance - feeling stressed, aches and pains, illness, worried, overwhelmed, unclear, pressured, or whatever your particular symptoms are - retune to your center. Focus on your breathing, bring your awareness into the center of your head and body, let go of thinking and focusing on external situations and people, nurture and love yourself. Then bring this centered state of being back into the world with you.

I created a tool to center, called “Feeding the heart” because when the heart is off balance, all of the other chakras seem to follow. You can listen to my audio book here which reviews grounding and centering for singers, actors and speakers, by visiting my website and getting the free ebook.
I love what you’re doing here and will be sending many students your way! Most people overlook how important it is to stay grounded and centered.
Thank you!

Hello Dot,
I love the sound of that: “Feeding the heart” - sounds like a wonderful tool for centering. And that’s great you have an audio book and ebook to offer performers as being centered and grounded is so important.
I have a couple of helpful articles on this site with how-to steps for getting centered and grounded, but I’ve also recently created an audio course called Energy Balancing Tools which your students might also find helpful in conjuction with your teachings.
It’s great that these types of tools are getting spread around the world!
Take care,
Gini

Very nice article. I feel that Center in head and body should have been specified. By center of head, to you mean the pineal gland which is symbolized by the middle of eyebrows and by center of body, do you mean the Dan tien which is two inches below and deep in the navel. The paragraph beginning with “When we pull our energy back from the goals” is really good

Hello Hiren,
Thanks for your comment and question - good to clarify as I do mean the pineal gland in the center of the head. I describe it more clearly in my article http://www.ginigrey.com/wp/spiritual-insights/centered-within/. Being connected to the Dan tien is very helpful too - not something I have a lot of experience with but it does seem connected to life force energy. Anything you can add on that here would be great…
Take care,
Gini
