Being in a State of Non-Resistance

Posted on October 19th, 2009

daisyLike a flower blowing gently in the breeze, being in a state of non-resistance means going with the flow, while being grounded at the same time. When we stop resisting life we move into ease and everything falls into perfect alignment. Synchronicities abound, aches and pains diminish, stress melts away, creativity flourishes, relationships heal, and we experience a profound sense of peace.

Resistance requires effort whereas being in a state of non-resistance requires no effort at all. When we are in resistance we become stuck, defensive, shut down and reactive. Even slight forms of resistance can cause emotional and physical distress, blinding us to possibilities and solutions. Fear, judgment, and denial are all forms of resistance.

Non-resistance involves accepting what is, even if it is unpleasant as resisting it only makes it worse. Resistance acts like glue, sticking us to the things we don’t want to be near. Yet when we let go, relax and move into a state of ease, difficult situations disappear or don’t bother us as much.

When we live in a state of non-resistance, without holding, pushing away or struggling for or against anything, we move into the stream of life where the essence of our being is free to flow through us and into our daily activities.

Noticing When You’re in Resistance
The first step in moving out of resistance is to recognize when you are in it. Become familiar with what it feels like when you are resistant versus non-resistant.

Non-Resistant    VS    Resistant
Relaxed                    Tight
Sense of flow            Tension
Lighter emotions        Heavy emotions
Acting                      Reacting
Energy                     No Energy
Can hear                  Can’t hear
Easy to see mistakes  Hard to admit mistakes
Self-control               Controlled externally

How to Stop Resisting
If you notice you are in a state of resistance, the next step is to try one or more of the following suggestions as a way to become non-resistant.

Visually. Imagine your body is clear and see-through like glass or water so nothing can stick to it. This will allow anyone else’s judgments, problems or emotions to pass right through and out of your space.

Physically. Do something natural to relax your body - go for a walk in nature, stretch, breath deeply, or do an enjoyable form of exercise.

Emotionally. Feel emotions as they arise - don’t stuff or repress them - let them be there and notice they are just the body’s way of communicating to you through vibration.

Mentally. Release resentments and judgments. Learn to let go of thoughts and beliefs that create a resistant attitude.

Spiritually. Center within and meditate on the state of non-resistance. Touch into your spiritual essence of ease and lightness.

As you practice being non-resistant, it will soon become a way of life and you will be the flower blowing gently in the breeze.

    Hello Gini,

I want to tell you how much I appreciate the wisdom you bring to a variety of elements that are sacred to one’s well-being.

I am writing because I find myself struggling with trust and betrayal. While letting go is an ultimate goal, what do we do when our trust is breached in relationships? We are betrayed and then have to move on in a healthy direction.

As a mother I reflect on how we start our lives and then grow in the world, where our trust in ourself and others is altered and even destroyed with the result that we live in fear consciously and unconsciously. I have learned that fear is something we do to protect ourselves and this goes to healthy boundaries but how do we balance protection with fear overtaking our lives? Acceptance of how things are is key including our fearful reactions but I believe we all want to evolve and go higher towards love and in true love there is no fear.

    Your thoughts are appreciated.

    Best regards,

    Patricia

    Hello Patricia,

Wonderful thoughts and questions. When our trust has been destroyed, it’s important to regain it within ourselves. Even the most trustworthy people make mistakes and hurt the ones they love, but if we can trust our intuition, then we know when to set boundaries etc.

If we live in fear we lose connection to our higher self - the very part of us that sees the bigger picture and knows what and whom to trust. As we listen to our body and follow our intution we are safe to let go of fear and trust our inner voice and higher knowing without having to guard ourselves.

I think it’s also important to look at the bigger spiritual picture in our lives when we’ve had our trust betrayed. Perhaps on a soul level we attracted the situation in order to grow, heal and evolve. We may want to learn how to set clearer boundaries, how to forgive, or how to trust our intuion.

Unfortunately, sometimes it’s the most painful experiences that give us the best learning opportunities (because we are so conscious during pain - but if we choose to grow and evolve consciously we don’t have to create so many hard life lessons).

And yes, acceptance is key. Acceptance is really just acknowleding what is without resisting it. From there a space opens up for us to create change in a positive direction.

I think it’s also helpful to rise above dualty of right and wrong, good and bad. Here’s an article I wrote on another site of mine: Transcend Duality and Rise Above Dichotomies.

    Thanks for your insightful comments,

    Gini

You wrote…”When we stop resisting life we move into ease and everything falls into perfect alignment. Synchronicities abound, aches and pains diminish, stress melts away, creativity flourishes, relationships heal, and we experience a profound sense of peace.”

I truly want to believe this, but there is no evidence to support the above statement. I admittedly find a more profound sense of well being when I do not resist, but I think you go beyond reason when stating that “Synchronicities abound, aches and pains diminish” Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

    Hello Dean,

This is true, moving into a state of non-resistance to experience what I wrote does go beyond reason - that’s because it goes beyond what the mind can comprehend. When we feel pain or discomfort, our mind and body instinctively want to resist it, but that only slows the natural flow of energy down in the body which caused further pain. When we relax, let go and stop resisting what is, our energy flows and pain can move and release (emotional, mental or physical).

With the synchronicities, I have found that when I resist a situation, more obstacles appear, yet when I don’t resist, but instead accept and move into the flow of life, suddenly the right people, circumstances etc show up.

The only way to know this for yourself is to try it, as the mind can’t prove it except through validating your own experience. It’s not something that is easy to verify through scientific data - it’s like the power of the present momenent - you can only prove that by experiencing it directly.

    Take care,

    Gini
